Shipping Heat + Cold: What It Does to Candles

At a glance

  • Shipping exposes candles to hot trucks, cold porches, and rapid temperature swings—cosmetic changes are common.

  • Most issues are fixable with a simple reset: stabilize 24 hours, blot oil, tidy debris, trim wick, then do a calm first burn.

  • Skip “heat hacks” (oven, boiling water, torch)—they often create more mess or risk.

  • If there’s jar damage, heavy oil pooling, or abnormal burn behavior after stabilization, contact the maker.

Why candles look different after shipping (and why it’s usually normal)

Candles are wax + fragrance. Both respond to temperature.

In transit, a candle can experience:

  • hot delivery trucks

  • cold overnight warehouses

  • porch sun

  • rapid warm→cool cycles

This can cause:

  • oil sheen (“sweating”)

  • surface texture changes (ripples, frosting)

  • wax pull-away from glass (wet spots)

  • wick posture shifts

  • “headspace shock” (first sniff feels extra intense or odd)

Most of these are cosmetic and settle quickly.

What you might see after delivery (and what it means)

1) Oil on top (sweating)

Light sheen or small beads = fragrance components migrating after heat swings.
Usually cosmetic.

Kept response: stabilize + blot gently (below).

2) Rough/uneven top

Ripples, frosting, small craters—common after warm-to-cool transitions.
Usually cosmetic.

Kept response: stabilize first; optional gentle smoothing later.

3) Wet spots / pull-away from glass

Wax contracted and pulled from the jar wall.
Usually cosmetic and doesn’t affect burn.

Kept response: do nothing—store stable.

4) Scent feels “different” on first open

Headspace can smell sharper after shipping.

Kept response: keep covered and re-check after 24 hours.

5) Wick looks slightly bent

Softened wax can allow minor wick shift.

Kept response: after stabilization, straighten gently; don’t dig.

Stabilization Protocol

Step 1 — Bring it inside promptly

Don’t leave candles on a porch in sun or cold for hours.

Step 2 — Keep it covered in a stable room for 24 hours

  • lid on / box closed

  • away from windows and vents

  • room-temperature, calm spot

This lets wax and fragrance re-equilibrate.

Step 3 — Assess calmly after 24 hours

Look for:

  • pooling oil vs light sheen

  • debris

  • wick posture

  • jar integrity (chips/cracks)

If all looks normal: you’re done.

If it’s sweating (oil on top): the safe fix

If there’s a light sheen or small beads:

  1. blot gently with paper towel (no scraping)

  2. wipe inner rim if oil is on glass

  3. make sure wick area is dry + upright

  4. let it rest another hour before lighting

If oil is pooling heavily, jump to “contact the maker.”

If the top looks rough: what to do

Most rough tops are cosmetic.

  1. stabilize 24 hours

  2. remove debris before lighting

  3. proceed with a calm first burn

Optional appearance-only smoothing:

  • hair dryer LOW, 8–12 inches away, moving constantly

  • stop at first gloss

  • cool undisturbed

Avoid torch/oven “fixes.”

The first burn after shipping (set it up to succeed)

Once stabilized:

  1. trim wick to ~¼ inch

  2. place in calm air (no drafts)

  3. burn long enough to establish good behavior (often 1–2 hours depending on size)

  4. extinguish cleanly (snuff/dip)

This prevents smoky residue and sets up clean relights.

What not to do (shipping edition)

Avoid:

  • microwaving a candle jar

  • putting it in an oven

  • boiling water into the candle

  • leaving it in sun “to smooth it out”

  • moving it while wax is liquid

Stable, moderate conditions beat extreme “fixes.”

When to contact the maker

Reach out if you see:

  • cracked/chipped glass

  • heavy, persistent oil pooling (not just sheen)

  • wick fully drowned/buried and won’t relight

  • strong harsh odor that persists after 24-hour stabilization

  • abnormal flame behavior in calm conditions (very tall flame, heavy smoke)

Include:

  • photos (top, wick, jar)

  • whether it sat outside in heat/cold

  • any visible leakage

A premium brand should help quickly.

  • bring inside promptly

  • covered, stable 24 hours

  • blot oil gently if present

  • remove debris + trim wick (~¼")

  • calm first burn (draft-free)

  • clean extinguish

  • contact maker for cracks/pooling oil/burn failure

Shipping can make candles look “off” for a day—usually it’s just temperature physics.
Give it 24 hours, keep it covered, then burn it calmly once. That’s the kept reset.
