Candle Care & Safety
A helpful starting place for preparing, burning, and looking after your candle.
How should I prepare my candle before lighting?
Start with the instructions printed on your candle. Before lighting, make sure the wick is in the condition specified on the label and the candle stands on a stable, heat-resistant surface, away from drafts, children, pets, and anything flammable. Never leave it unattended.
Why is my candle tunneling?
Tunneling is an uneven burn pattern in which wax remains at the container edges while a lower channel forms near the wick. Follow your candle's specified burn limits rather than trying improvised heat-trapping fixes. If it continues, let the candle cool and contact us with a photo.
What should I do if the flame is unusually high or smoky?
Extinguish the candle safely and let it cool before checking the wick and surrounding conditions. If unusual flame behavior or persistent soot continues, stop using that candle and contact us. Never try to adjust a burning wick or move a hot container.
How long should I burn a candle at a time?
Use the maximum burn-session time printed on your candle. It is not necessary, or safe, to extend a session just to melt wax all the way to the glass. If a deep tunnel persists, extinguish within the stated limit, let the candle cool, and ask us about that specific candle.
When should I stop using a candle?
Stop at the remaining-wax limit printed on your candle; Pruneme's current care guide advises stopping before the last half-inch of wax, or sooner if the label specifies. Discontinue use immediately if the vessel is damaged or the wick shifts toward the wall. Do not burn wax down to the bottom.
Can I use a candle safely around pets?
Keep any burning candle out of reach of pets and children, on a stable heat-resistant surface where it cannot be knocked over. Never leave it unattended. Do not assume that a fragrance marketed as natural or gentle is universally safe for every animal. For a pet-specific health concern, consult a veterinarian.
Choose a Scent
Understand fragrance descriptions and discover which scent families appeal to you.
Are fragrance notes ingredients?
Not necessarily. Fragrance notes are a descriptive language for how a scent smells. Words such as amber, tea, or cashmere can suggest an impression without identifying the exact ingredients in the fragrance. Ask us about a particular substance instead of inferring it from a note list.
Why can't I smell my candle after a while?
With continued exposure, a familiar scent can become less noticeable even when fragrance is still present. This change in perception is one possible explanation, alongside airflow, room conditions and product performance. A lighter impression is not proof that the candle has stopped releasing fragrance.
What is the difference between cold throw and hot throw?
Cold throw is the fragrance noticed from a candle when it is unlit. Hot throw describes the fragrance perceived while it burns. The two can differ because heating, room conditions and scent perception affect the result. Neither description should be taken as a guarantee of how strongly you will smell a candle at home.
Does a fresh-smelling candle clean or purify the air?
No. A fragrance described as fresh, clean or airy is describing a smell, not demonstrating filtration, disinfection or air purification. A scented candle should be chosen for its fragrance and used according to its safety instructions, not relied on to remove indoor pollutants or replace ventilation.
Does a stronger fragrance mean a better candle?
Not necessarily. Strength is only one aspect of fragrance. Balance, character, the room and personal preferences also shape the experience. Someone may prefer a soft tea or green note over a powerful spice blend. The best choice is one whose character and intensity suit the way you intend to use it.
Rooms & Styling
Considered ideas for fragrance, safe placement, and the materials around your candle.
Where should I place a candle in a living room?
Choose a stable, heat-resistant surface that allows you to supervise the candle and keep a safe distance from drafts and combustible materials. Once that is settled, use the vessel's simple shape to complement the room. Styling close to books or dried stems should remain an unlit arrangement.
Can I style a candle with dried flowers or books?
An unlit candle can be part of a decorative arrangement, but dried botanicals, paper and fabric must be kept well away from an open flame. If the arrangement needs to remain together, use flameless light instead. An unlit styling photograph is not a safe-burning demonstration.
Will one scented candle fragrance a large open-plan room?
Not predictably. Room volume, ventilation, where you sit, candle formulation and individual perception all affect how noticeable a scent feels. Try the candle in an appropriate smaller zone first while following its label, rather than assuming a jar size guarantees whole-room coverage. Never add more unattended flames to force stronger scent.
