When to Stop Burning — Signs of Overheating

At a glance: Stop burning if the flame behaves abnormally, smoke persists, debris ignites, or the container is damaged. Never touch the jar to check how hot it is. The candle’s label sets the maximum burn time; a full melt pool is not a reason to exceed it.
When to extinguish your candle
An unusually large flame, repeated heavy flickering, continuous smoke, or rapidly accumulating soot calls for stopping the session. Cracks or a damaged base mean the container should not be used again. Do not keep burning to improve fragrance or melt wax at the edges.
Extinguish the candle before leaving the room or going to sleep. Keep children, pets and flammable objects away. A burning candle needs supervision even when its flame looks steady.
Extinguish, cool, then inspect
Use a snuffer or gently blow out the flame, and check that it is fully out. Never pour water onto the candle. Leave it in place until the wax has cooled completely; do not move a candle with liquid wax.
Once cool, inspect the container and follow the maker’s care instructions. Do not relight cracked glass, a loose or displaced wick assembly, or a candle that repeatedly burns abnormally. Contact the maker for advice rather than trying to repair it while hot.
Prepare for the next burn
Use a stable, heat-resistant surface with clear space around and above the candle. Keep it away from drafts. Remove wick trimmings and other debris before lighting, and trim the wick according to its label; ¼ inch is common guidance.
Follow the manufacturer’s session limit and end-of-use instructions. For container candles, stop with about ½ inch of wax remaining, or earlier if the label requires it. Do not burn to the bottom.
